Tavira Island and the Ria Formosa

Tavira is practically within reach of the island of Tavira, one of the most popular beach destinations in the Algarve. This huge sand bank extends to Fuseta, about 15 kilometers to the west. This is one of the few islands in the region where you can set up a tent, and the designated camp near the pier is packed during the summer. Serving sunbathers is a handful of cafes and restaurants. Top sights of Tavira and easy day trips

Epitomizing the traditional fishing village of the Algarve, Santa Luzia is affectionately considered the capital of the region’s octopus, due to the dozens of empty creels stacked neatly on the pier by fishermen between expeditions to capture their indescribable quarry. Algarve attractions and locations

Close to the coast in the east of the Algarve, Tavira is one of the most beautiful cities in the region. Located on both sides of the wide Gilão River, this is a destination celebrated for its historical legacy, a past shaped by the Romans and later by the Moors, whose settlement on the banks of the river was surmounted by a castle, still visible today. The sloping roofs that define much of Tavira’s architecture are unique to this part of the Algarve. The same is true of the number of churches – 21 in total – that embellish the old city.
