Tavira is practically within reach of the island of Tavira, one of the most popular beach destinations in the Algarve. This huge sand bank extends to Fuseta, about 15 kilometers to the west. This is one of the few islands in the region where you can set up a tent, and the designated camp near the pier is packed during the summer. Serving sunbathers is a handful of cafes and restaurants. If you prefer to lose the crowd, just flip your slippers to the west and in 20 minutes, you’ll end up in your own space. During high season, you can take ferries directly to the island from the river in Tavira. Alternatively, there is a year-round ferry from the pier (weather permitting) at Quatro Águas, two kilometers east of the city center. It is also possible to explore the beautiful Ria Formosa, joining one of the tourist cruises that operate on the banks of the Tavira river.
